Shifu asked us to write a speech. He said maybe others could learn from what we’ve been through so I thought a lot about it, trying to decide what was the most important lesson I’ve learned. I’ve learned so much and I’m really not sure a speech can express a deep lesson like this, but I have to try.
The most important lesson I’ve learned here is to find my own way. SO many of us come here hoping to make a change we don’t know ourselves or trust ourselves enough to do it alone. We think someone can look deep inside us and tell us what to do and that if we just follow blindly someone out there can “fix” us. Shifu always says you have to “learn your own body” and he’s right… but I want to go further and say you have to “learn yourself” inside and out. The only way to make a lasting change is to do the work yourself… and it is very hard work.
It is hard work but that’s what kung fu is, hard work and that doesn’t just mean kicks and punches, it means looking at yourself and seeing thing that are difficult to see and to admit and it means being brace enough to trust your intuition. We all have an inner teacher who can guide us and once I found mine, I know that I would be okay, that leaving here didn’t mean I would stop learning and growing. I only hope that everyone can do the same.
