The Danish Girl in Wudang
I am a Danish girl who just finished my bachelor degree in sales and marketing this summer. I have been studying at wudang kungfu school for 3 weeks after having been in China for 2 months for travelling and visiting my sister.
This year was the first time i visited a Daoist temple during Chinese spring festival. After visitng the temple i was curious to learn more about Daoism. It was therefore a great opportunity for me when the chance to go to wudang mountain came to me as i wanted to extend my stay in China. I have always wanted to go to Wudang mountain after having heard alot about it from people and movies but also because i have always loved kungfu.
I started to search for schools online and found this school which apealed to me with its focus on both internal as well as external training.
Coming from Denmark which is totally different from China i was a bit concerned about the conditions. For example in Denmark the toilets are not holes but you sit on them. Luckily i have been in China many times before so i got used to it although it was a bit unconfortable in the beginning.
The food at the school was better than many other places i have been at although i often missed eating western food since we combine western and Chinese food at home. But it was okay and the town was just a few minutes walk from here so i could buy whatever i needed.
When i came i talked with the school about my needs and wishes and was assigned a coach. And for the first time a practiced qigong and taichi. Although i have only been here for a short time i really feel that i have learned a lot new about my own body as well as how to move differently. And although not much i have also learned more about how the body and mind works from a Daoist perspective, how things are connected and needs to be in balance which for example can be obtained through several ways including through the food we eat, our mindsets and through practice.
Compared to other schools i have stayed at in Beijing and Henan i feel that this is the place where i have progressed the most. Perhaps it is because i have never practiced taichi or qigong before and because of the holistic approach.
But also as at the other schools we only practiced in large groups instead of having a coach like here. This is a great advantage as there is focus on you and it gives no space for loose ends. You have to focus on each move. Having an indvidual coach is also a huge advantage as there are people from all over the world with different needs and levels. Thus you are able to develop in your own pace and you get to focus on your own interests as you can choose to practice everything from taichi and bagua to sword and fan forms.
The coach and shifu are able to guide you in your needs and the training is hard but yet not too hard as in other schools where you loose all your energy and don’t want to train anymore. I think for many people who don’t practice sports everyday this is a better approach.
In fact many people have told me that they like to come here as opposed to other places it is not necessary to have trained martial arts since you were a kid, but there is place for everybody, young and old, newbeginners as well as people who have already studied martial arts.
Apart from the training part one of the greatest things about the school was the social environment. As mentioned you meet people from all around the world with different backgrounds and histories. The environment at the school is relaxed and allows for social activities and close friendships to be made. And i think it is a combination of that and the training program that make many students wanting to stay here for longer periods keep returning to the school.
If i could stay for longer i definately would and i am certainly coming back.
